able to travel more extensively than we had in the past. However, her deteriorating condition necessitates my taking responsibility for home maintenance, cooking, shopping, and other necessary tasks. My time is therefore concentrated on these chores and in caring for my wife and interacting with my children and grandchildren.

What meaningful activities are you involved in?

In addition to caring for my wife and home, I am involved in my church, in which I assist with a youth group. As a former social worker, I receive a great deal of joy in working with young people and in assisting them in meeting the challenges of their lives. I also enjoy walking with other older residents in my neighborhood and playing chess, card games, and an occasional round of golf.

Are these satisfying for you? Why or why not?

My activities are generally satisfying and are sufficiently diverse to ensure that I do not become bored or feel that I am stuck in any kind of rut. At the same time, my wifeÆs growing inability to participate comfortably or regularly in these activities is a problem. Many things that we did together before her illness accelerated are no longer options for us, such as dancing and travel. I believe I would be more satisfied with my life were my wife better able to participate in the activities that we have so long enjoyed.

What meaningful social relationships do you have?

The primary social relationships that I expect to enjoy in later life are those with my wife, my children, my grandchildren, and other family members. I believe that as one ages and if one is fortunate enough to share a close family relationship, these relationships become much more important than less intimate friendships or professional associations.
