Nature vs. Nurture: Current Status of the Debate

The nature vs. nurture debate regarding homosexuality is really no longer much of a debate; this is because no collective of studies definitively supports one perspective over another. For example, Byne and Parsons (1993) meticulously analyzed all of the major biogenetic studies of homosexuality and were unable to find any research that definitively supported a biological theory of causation. Similarly, Hammer (1996) who, although an advocate of the power and punch of biogenetic models in explaining human behavior, was also forced to conclude that there was no ôgay gene.ö Hammer says that while homosexuality is rooted in biology, twin studies have definitively shown that it is not solely rooted there. He offers a computer comparison, noting that genes are the hardware but psychological and social experiences are the software of human behavior with a mixture of both genes and psychosocial/environmental experiences determining sexual orientation.
