A Comorbid Relationship: Anxiety and Chemical Dependency

These disorders, particularly when coupled with chemical dependency or other diagnoses, present a significant problem for society in that they interfere with an individual's work, education and family/social life. They also contribute to the high rates of alcohol and substance abuse in the United States (Anxiety Disorders, 2008). Anxiety disorders are an additional problem for health professionals because the physical symptoms of anxiety frequently bring people to primary care doctors or emergency rooms; further, they are often misdiagnosed as clinical depression and are difficult to treat when found in combination with chemical dependence in that pharmaceutical interventions are not possible (Johnson, 1992).
