How to Get Parents to Read with Their Kids

). This theory assists with the understanding that parent involvement is important for student reading development, family and environmental factors influence this involvement, and multiple factors influence parent motivation levels for their involvement.

Motivating parent involvement with their child to improve their reading ability must consider many factors. This motivation is important for parents to increase their involvement in their child's reading. For example, parent education leads might lead to increased reading self-efficacy. Parent education leads to beliefs in the importance of their child reading well (Lee, Sax, Kim, & Hagedorn, 2004). Parent support networks positively or negatively reinforce parent motivation for their involvement, which either supports or discourages this involvement (Sheldon, 2002). Parents have different ideas about their involvement and this influences their motivation levels (Sy, Rowley, & Schulenberg, 2007). Thus to increase parent motivation it is important to address each of these factors and more. The teacher seeking to develop motivation in parents would need to first understand factors related to each parent's current level of involvement. Studies show that parents want to help their children and be involved if they have the tools to do so (La Paro, Kraft-Sayre, & Pianta, 2003). The teacher would then need to help the parents understand the importance of their involvement in their child's reading, provide them with the tools to do so, and help parents overcome barriers to this involvement. Providing parents with these tools will increase their motivation levels for involvement.

Parents are involved with their children to many degrees and in many ways. To further motivate these parents it is important to understand what influences this motivation and how to evoke increased motivation. The following discusses literature related to the research questions.
