Another example of moral relativism is in the practice of divorce and remarriage. This is now considered by the mainstream to be "part of our culture". Catholics need to recognize the legal right to dissolve a civil marriage to respect the practices of other faiths, such as Judaism, which has been modifying the practice since the time of Jesus (Wylen, 68). But the Church teaches that a valid Catholic marriage cannot be dissolved because Jesus directly taught this (Matthew 19:9). "Such a solution, while it might seem kind to individuals in painful situations, is excluded by the divine command" (Wuerl, 249-250). Popular culture views this position very dimly, even though politically we are the ones being tolerant of differences between faiths.
