Product, Service, and Social Marketing: Differences

Product marketing is the marketing of products using the first four Ps of marketing: product, pricing, place, and promotion. Its goal is to fulfill an unsatisfied consumer need in exchange for financial gain, and to be accomplished successfully, it requires an understanding of consumer wants and needs so that it can satisfy them. An example in the health care industry would be the marketing of a prescription medication such as a weight loss pill. Many consumers are seeking to lose weight, and the marketing of a pill that can help them lose weight easily is the right product for them. Pricing needs to be affordable, place must consider where the overweight or weight-conscious population is located, and promotion would emphasize the benefits of being slimmer.

Services marketing is marketing based on relationship and value rather than on the marketing of a product. Service marketing differs from product marketing in that services are intangible and the buyer cannot return them. Marketing a service is in essence telling the consumer what service will be provided to him and what the benefits will be. An example in the health care industry would be the marketing of gastric bypass surgery. For consumers that need to lose a large amount of weight, this type of surgery is marketed as a way to achieve the weight loss that has eluded them with calorie-based diets.

Social marketing is a kind of mixed marketing that seeks to influence social behaviors to benefit the target audience and society in general rather than the marketer. This type of marketing starts with research into the target audience's needs, desires, and motivations and leverages that research to develop a marketing campaign that appeals to people on their own terms.
