Weiss (2005) A Journey in Holistic Growth

As a response to the article by Weiss (2005), "A journey in holistic growth" I find that I related particularly to a specific passage regarding being a woman, "means to be balanced and secure," which was a "new-found feeling" that could not be derived from material things but comes from knowing the self which brings a sense of "inner" security regarding being a woman. I find that this passage reflects what I have experienced personally and in a caring-healing role as a professional nurse.

Today being a woman is hard to understand since there are so many new expectations placed on the role of the female. A woman must run the home, raise the children, and maintain a successful career in the meantime. I find that while men may be more advanced in their acceptance of new female roles, the care-giving in the home still falls on the woman's shoulders. As I strive to fulfill all womanly roles in my own life, I have found myself to feel more stressed and harried, which is the opposite of secure. I was surprised to find that attaining material goals did little to bring me security, which made me try harder and realize less.

The more I tried the less secure I felt since I had even more commitments to realize. The passage in this article served as a reminder of what I had recently begun to realize on my own. Outer goals do not bring security and it is only through understanding me as a person and striving to meet my own needs that I have felt any sense of security. The more I realized the key to this sense of peace, the more I strive to achieve an increased awareness of who I am and what I need. This understanding has helped me understand how to help others as well. Thus, I find that this passage reflects what I have experienced personally as well as in a caring-healing role as a professional nurse.
