Organizational Behavior in a School Cafeteria

The forces of organizational behavior exert influence in terms of internal and external forces on the organization. As a matter of fact, "No organization can exist in a vacuum; each is set in a particular country and region to which it is inextricably linked. This setting provides multiple contexts that influence how the organization operates and how and what it produces" ("Chapter 3-Key Forces in the External Environment," n.d.). This executive summary will discuss how internal and external forces including fiscal policy, competition, globalization, organizational mission, and economy impact organizational behavior in three organizations-Ashurst Elementary School, Hudson Group, and Asphalt Paving Company.

At Ashurst Elementary School where I am a food service worker, fiscal policy comes into play in terms of the amount that children pay for their lunch. If the parents' income is under a certain amount, then the child's lunch is either reduced in price from $2.25 to $0.40, or it is completely free, depending upon where the income falls within our guidelines. The economy affects the organization by virtue of its effect on the parents' income, because if the economy is rocky then the parents' income will not be as high, therefore forcing us to implement the reduced-price or free lunch option more frequently. The only competition is internal, and it is competition among workers, who vie for each others jobs and work to gain the boss's approval. Globalization affects us mainly in terms of the prices we pay for food items; fortunately, for the most part it reduces the cost of goods to us. Our organizational mission is to provide meals for the children, so effectively they are our customers. Because the USDA food program requires us to serve the food even if the child will not eat it, this causes a lot of waste that we are attempting to combat by serving ice cream on Fridays as an incentive for the children to eat<...
