Title: Stem Cell Research: A Medical Breakthrough For Everyone

Strong Start: How many of you have friends and family members who have serious diseases? These diseases could be treated in the future with stem cell therapy. [Background explaining stem cell research.] The American Heart Association estimates that about 128 million people have diseases that could be treated in the future by stem cell therapies. President Obama has just approved the first taxpayer-funded embryonic stem cell studies.

Transition to the body: There are two things that may make you doubt the validity of embryonic stem cell research. I'm going to explain to you why neither of these ideas is logical.

1st seminal point: Some people think that using embryonic stem cells means taking cells from live human beings and is thus immoral. This is untrue.

Illustration: While you may or may not approve of abortion, it is currently legal. Surely no one wants to miscarry a fetus, and yet, sadly, some women do. The tissues of these fetuses would be discarded if they were not used.

Elaboration: The situation is the same as when a person unfortunately dies in a car crash and donates his or her organs so that others with organ diseases can live. Most people would not consider donating one's organs immoral. In fact, I think most of us would consider it heroic.

Substantiation: The fetuses that are used are human, but they're not living. In the case of discarded in vitro fertilization cells, these are not fetuses at all. They're microscopic clusters of undifferentiated cells.

Reiteration: Harvesting embryonic stem cells does not cause a loss of human life. Instead, it makes the best of unfortunate situations and saves people's lives. As mentioned previously, the cells would be discarded if not used.
