Use of Computers to Engage Students in Mathematics Learning

e used around half as much.

Examples of computer programs used include Reader Rabbit's Math which is a program that is technically strong. For the time-section the student can move the hands of the clock forward and backward with the mouse. Coins can be combined to reach totals and they appear realistic. Fractions are found in an enjoyable format with fun activities to complete. The program adjusts levels of difficulty with student progression and teachers can set the levels manually(Becher, 1999).

Computer Use for Mathematics Learning in Elementary School

Butzin (2001) reported results of an evaluation of project CHILD (Computers Helping Instruction and Learning Development). The author stated that research that is focused on technology-based programs in classroom environments are not common. The findings from three previous studies are noted, however information regarding methodology and sample are not provided. The study of IBM's Writing to Read program reported positive results in writing and reading for young learners. A 10-year study called Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow determined effects of technology-rich classrooms and found that attitudes improved but test scores did not. A third study showed positive results for low-achieving students who used technology in a program called Higher Order Thinking Skills.

Butzin (2001) conducted a study to compare standardized test scores in mathematics and reading for second- and fifth-grade students from technology-rich elementary schools. One school implemented Project Computers Helping Instruction and Learning Development (CHILD) and the other did not. An assumption for the study was that computers would provide motivation, involvement, and feedback which are factors related to learning. Project CHILD provided instruction for Grades K-5; classroom computers are used with hands-on learning. Teams of three teachers work with students across three grade levels for ...
