The history of Methodism in America begins in 1735 with the efforts of James Edward Oglethorpe to rescue some unfortunate debtors from a debtors' prison in England (Daniels 105). Oglethorpe was grieved that "thousands of men in Great Britain rotted in prison for the misfortune of being poor" and relocated a number of them to the Colony of Georgia in America (Daniels 105). John Wesley was subsequently sent to the colony by a British society as a missionary chaplain, and he expressed his mission thus, "My chief motive is the hope of saving my own soul. I hope to learn the true sense of the Gospel by preaching it to the heathen" (Daniels 106). On the voyage to America to fulfill this mission, Wesley encountered Moravians who displayed fearless courage in the face of a terrible storm (Daniels 109). Their lack of fear impressed Wesley greatly and made a lasting impact on him. He worked diligently in Georgia and gained many followers, but in 1737 sailed off to return to England followin

The Early History of Boston's North End Boston's North End, the city's oldest residential neighborhood, has had a colorful history dating back to 1630 when it was founded by English clergyman William Blackstone (Boston: History 2008; All About). Blackstone who also happened to be the first white settler in the area from across the Atlantic the Protestant religious sect, the Puritans (Boston: History 2008; All About). Boston was named for the Puritans' home in Lincolnshire, England and soon became the capital of the Massachusetts Bay Colony (Boston: History 2008). As it was bounded by water on three sides, Boston was the major New England seaport in the American colonies, as well as being "the largest British settlement on the continent" (Boston: History 2008). Until his arrival, what is now Boston's North End was simply a point of land extending into a natural harbor connected to the Atlantic Ocean, and it was originally occupied by Native American tribes that named t

Support for Same-Sex Marriage Introduction Imagine the spouse you have loved and resided with for years unexpectedly dies. Her two children from a male/female union were raised by you and her as your own. Now that she is dead, you have no right to burial or funeral involvement, no right or claim to her property or life insurance, and no legal custody or parental rights related to the children. This is because you are also a women and same sex marriage is not an option for you in 50 states in the nation. As such, denying legal marriage status and the rights attendant on it to same sex couples creates enormous emotional and economic pain and suffering to numerous individuals involved in same sex relationships. One of my strongest moral convictions also happens to be one of my strongest political convictions, that same sex couples should have the right to be legally married in every state in America. Recently California and Massachusetts have not onl

Boeing's Marketing Introduction The marketing mix-product, place, promotion and price-that a company selects both influences and is influenced by the strategic choices that the company makes. As companies encounter different environmental challenges such as a downturn in the economy or political unrest in overseas markets, they may make changes in their marketing mix that shift the strategic alternatives available to them. This research considers one of the largest American companies-Boeing-and the marketing mix that it uses. This marketing mix is analyzed against the strategic direction that the company is following. Particular emphasis is given to the company's largest business unit, commercial aircraft. Background Boeing competes in the aerospace industry and its largest business unit is that of commercial aircraft. The company also manufactures military aircraft and some space and defense systems. Because the company's products s

Euthanasia Introduction One of my strongest moral and political convictions is my opposition to physician-assisted suicide (PAS) or euthanasia. I strongly support this conviction because I view PAS or euthanasia as both morally reprehensible and politically illegal. My view on this issue is backed by strong arguments with significant persuasive appeal, across both moral and political realms. Additionally, I believe all individuals should hold this conviction for the primary reason that euthanasia or PAS creates enormous pain and suffering for the loved ones who survive the deceased in numerous ways across multiple dimensions and aspects of life. Legally, PAS and euthanasia are illegal in an overwhelming majority of states in the U.S. Morally, PAS and euthanasia are against God's law. Opposing euthanasia or PAS should be a conviction supported by all individuals because of the pain and suffering these alternatives cause to a significant number

Introduction The following presents the topic of Sickle-cell anemia. The topic is describes along with an explanation of why this is an interesting and important area of chemistry. The potential impact on the environment, agriculture, economics, public health or society in general is provided. Next conclusions and recommendations are made. Discussion Sickle cell disease is a common monogenetic disorder found worldwide that affects 30 million people (Inati, Koussa, Taher, & Perrine, 2008). Sickle cell anemia is an interesting and important area of chemistry because, as noted by Inati et al., this disease is a major public health concern linked to morbidity and mortality. Anemia is the most common hematologic problem found in children and 30% of children have anemia. Thus, it is important to diagnose the type of anemia to determine if the child suffers from sickle cell anemia (Inati, 2008). Sickle cell disease varies phenotypically and people vary in symptoms ranging fr

A key issue that has to be overcome with respect to marketing is the question of why it cannot simply be equated with selling and advertising. To be sure, those elements are important to the marketing process, and the ultimate aim of any marketing plan must be to bring in sales. However, marketing is spoken about in the professional literature as a much more structured and complex undertaking. Whatever its attributes may be, it does seem clear that effective marketing is a vital component of organization success. The ongoing need of an organization to gauge and respond to customer needs or, alternatively, stakeholder preferences, is an essential test of marketing effectiveness, perhaps even the life of an organization. The whole matter is complicated by the fact that what a company is selling, such as, say, fast-performing liver pills, and what customers are buying, such as, say, relief from pain, may be related but nonetheless different. Thus modern ideas of marketing may take

Diffusion of Culture throughout History Since the beginnings of Ancient Civilization, culture has been transmitted from one society to another through various means. War, trade, migration, and other forces are responsible for the transmission of culture that is reflected in the architecture, art, government structure, and other aspects of society. This analysis will provide a brief discussion of how war, trade, and migration have been responsible for cultural transmission in Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, and the United States. In Ancient Civilizations like Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome war, trade, and migration resulted in cultural exchange. These forces created interaction between cultures. The result of this interaction created cultural transmission whereby art, architecture, government structures and other aspects of society made their way from one culture to another. In many instances such aspects of society were adapted by cultures to suit their own values, beliefs and needs. Mesopotamia exhibited a highly developed social complexity for an Ancient Civilization, along with Egypt. Trade and warfare created cultural

L.A. Confidential. Original music: Jerry Goldsmith The musical styles used in the film L.A. Confidential are dominated by the popular songs of the early 1950s: pop music, from the early '50s hit parade, Broadway show tunes, or the cool jazz style of the period; original score by longtime film composer Jerry Goldsmith. The popular music of the period is a kind of soundtrack that evokes the dominant cultural cues of the period but in an ironic way. The selections of pop music are critical in that their lyrics are upbeat, celebratory of life. For example, Johnny Mercer's "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive," composed and sung by him, conveys the confidently triumphalist ethos of postwar/early Cold War American society. "Wheel Of Fortune" prays for success, and "Look For The Silver Lining," sung by the silver-voiced Chet Bake

Ethical Challenges in Medicare Scam Factual Situation In the period from 2000 to 2007, more than 478,000 claims were filed with Medicare in the names of between 16,500 and 18,200 dead physicians. As a result, the Medicare program-which insures the elderly and disabled-paid at least $92.8 million in fraudulent claims. The actual amount paid could be higher since the study which uncovered the fraud only looked at physicians who had been dead for at least one year. The study was conducted under the auspices of the investigations panel of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs (Zhang, 2008). Live physicians are also associated with Medicare fraud. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) estimates that 27,000 health-care providers-including individuals and

Triumph Over Temptation According to an article titled Triumph over Temptation written by Matthew Kirdahy published by Forbes, corporate America's moral compass is either pointed in the wrong direction or it is broken. In this article, Stephen Goldman, a professor at the Catholic University of America School of Law is interviewed about the problems in corporate America as they relate to ethical choices and legal obligations. According to Mr. Goldman, the most expensive ethical error by management in recent history is not the accounting fraud that occurred at Enron. Instead, it is various forms of manipulation by senior executives done in order to increase their personal wealth. Of equal concern is the fact that these senior executives seem to have a sense of entitlement, and believe that they are immune from rules governing both legal and ethical behavior in U.S. corporations. Goldman makes an unusual comment when he states that a few things have changed dramatica

George Washington and His Legacy Esteemed as the "Father of our Country," George Washington was not only America's first president but also its spiritual leader and model. A man who lived his own life in humility and sterling character, Washington has much to offer Americans in his legacy to them. Washington's service to his country forever changed its course, and his own deep religious beliefs permeated all that he did in her behalf. Washington left us not just an inspiration but a model of what it means to be an American, and that model includes patriotism, virtue and character, and religious freedom. Washington's patriotism was irrefutable. As commander-in-chief of the Continental Army in 1775, he faced "a hopeless cause" with "no trained soldiers, no money, no ammunition, no weapons, and no supplies" as he prepared to take on "the greatest army in the world," that of Great Britain (Roche 1997). Suffering like his men from cold and deprivation, Washington

McDonald's Online Presence Internationally Introduction McDonald's is one of the most recognized American brands, along with Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and Marlboro. The McDonald's web site reinforces this since before entering the site, visitors select which country they are interested in. This research considers the McDonald's site in reference to three different countries: Lebanon, Hong Kong, and the United Kingdom, and how the sites are both similar and different for these nations. It should be noted that the iconic golden arches and the slogan "I'm Lovin' It" appear on all three sites. Lebanon The link to the Lebanon site brings up a page with Arabic writing, and three pictures, including one of Ronald McDonald and one of an obviously Middle Eastern man in traditional dress. There

Developing a Team Introduction This research considers three communication tools, three performance tools, and a team-building activity to enhance team performance. For the purposes of this exercise, it is assumed that the team is relatively small-having eight members-that all members are located in the same physical facility, but come from different departments. Communication Strategies The first communication strategy is to minimize the use of e-mail. While an effective communication tool in many instances, e-mail messages lack the nonverbal cues that can lead to misinterpretation, and can require several iterations that could be handled more quickly through a phone call or face-to-face contact. The team

Rising Cost of Gas and The economy Rising costs of gas affect the economy and everyone in it, including business and consumer members as well as the general population. According to the EIA (2001), from 1997 to 1999, energy prices decreased, boosting the economy. If this had not taken place, steady prices would have reduced the growth rate of GDP by 0.3 percentage points. Following this period, energy prices first rose dramatically and then declined again. Over this four-year period, steady energy prices could have boosted GDP growth by 0.2 percentage points but the volatility found thwarted this growth potential (EIA 1). Volatility in gas and energy prices affects all consumers and producers. High gas prices affect busi

Motion Capture & 3D Animation Motion capture, motion tracking, or "mocap" is a "technique of digitally recording movements for entertainment, sports, and medical applications" (Motion 1). Where filmmaking is concerned, motion capture refers to the "technique of recording the actions of human actors, and using that information to animate digital character models in 3D animation" (Motion 1). Motion capture has its origins in the pioneering photography work of moving images conducted by Eadweard Muybridge in the late 19th century, but the first individuals to analyze human and animal motion with video was Etienne-Jules Marey (Windsor 1). Motion capture is used for film and animation, video games, and sports, where motion capture helps athletes analyze body movement and performance. Animation is the "rapid display of a sequence of images of 2D or 3D artwork or model positions in order to create an illusion of motion" (Animation 1). Motion capture is also relied upon

Galileo The following presents a detailed report on Galileo. His early life, family life, education, and contributions are discussed. His specific contributions to astronomy are noted along with the controversy that resulted from his presentation of the Copernican System. Early and Family Life Galileo was a physicist, astronomer, mathematician, and philosopher who was born in Italy in 1564 to his father, Vincenzo Galilei who was a musician and his mother, Giulia degli Ammannati. Galileo was the first of sixth or seven siblings, most believing it was six children. All born as nobility but not born to a rich family (Galileo, 2008). The family moved to Florence in the 1570s. Galileo never married but had a relationships with a woman named Marina Gamba who lived in his house and had three children with Galileo. Two daughters born, Virginia and Livia, who were each put in convents and became known as Sister Maria Celeste and Sister Arcangela. He left his son, Vi

Women and Gender Roles" A Traumatic Relationship The argument to be addressed in this essay is that between adolescence and menopause, women experience trauma in adjusting to their gender roles. This argument is based on several factors. First, women today continued to experience conflicting pulls and pushes - desires for independence and autonomy balanced by demands made on their lives by family responisbi9lities. Secondly, women are still likely to encounter many barriers to their advancement if they choose to pursue careers while also raising a family. Third, women receive many conflicting messages from society via the mass media about their roles and "place" in society. All of thee variables can be traumatizing in their effects. More and more American women are seeking careers and combining marriage and work. The proportion of women participating in the labor force in the United States and across the globe has increased dramatically in recent years, resulting invariably in an increase in the number of women in managerial and executive positions. Nevertheless, women remain underrepresented in management positions all over the world, a phenomenon especially

Showboat: Music by Jerome Kern, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein. First performed on Broadway December 27, 1927, running for one and a half years. A film version released by MGM in 1951 was viewed for this assignment. The cultural influences that have shaped American musical theater have naturally varied from one era to another. Many of these musicals mirror social norms and mores (Lubbock, 755). The dominant genre that emerged in the middle of the twentieth century was of a musical theater in which the play was the thing and the integration of song, humor, and production numbers into a single and inextricable artistic entity established an authentic musical theatre in the United States. One important musical, v

Muslims in the Media The power of the media in the modern world is undeniable. In the way the media frames an issue or a people group, it can shape changing public opinion and the deep-seated beliefs of a culture. "Media bias is a perceived notion that certain press has and is pushing a viewpoint, instead of reporting news or airing programs in an objective way" (Ellis-Christensen, n.d.). Often, there is an underlying objective behind media bias, as in the case of repeated assurances by media that U.S. beef is safe and no instances of Mad Cow disease have been reported here. Such coverage is designed to protect the beef industry, not the American people, and video clips of diseased cattle falling(a telltale sign of Mad Cow's disease(and being electric-prodded by handlers to force them to stand up and be counted for the slaughter prompted riots in Japan and South Korea after their governments agreed to allow U.S. beef into their countries. The case of media bias agains

Diversity's Advantages and Disadvantages Introduction Modern organizations face many challenges because of globalization, but key among these is the challenge of diversity. America's workforce includes a much greater diversity of ages, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and other characteristics than ever before. More than just a question of demographics, "Diversity in the workplace is one of the most critical challenges facing US organizations today," and "Nearly every issue of Fortune, Business Week, or The Wall Street Journal addresses some problem related to workplace diversity (De Meuse, Hostager, Eau Claire, & O'Neill, 2007, p. 38). In fact, the Society for Human Resource Management conducted a survey in the late 1990s that found that "over 80 percent of the Fortune 500 companies either had a diversity program or were planning to implement one within the next year" (De Meuse, Hostager, Eau Claire, & O'Neill, 2007, p. 38). Diversity has become a force to be reckone

Transportation's Relationship with the Economy Thesis Statement There is an old U.S. Army Corps motto that says, "Nothing happens until something moves!" The principle behind this idea is that without transportation an army could not function to complete its missions. The same principle applies to the economy. Whether global, national, or local, the economy is heavily dependent upon transportation. There are very few businesses that do not require some form of transportation to effectively move their goods and services to their customers. This paper will examine the importance of transportation in the economy and demonstrate both its positive and negative impacts. Transportation and the Economy An analysis of transportation's impact on the economy must start with a definition of terms. Transportation can be defined as the movement of people and/or goods from one place to another, and the economy consists of "Activities related to the production

The Packaged Tour When I read the essay, I was reminded of one of the opening scenes from the movie "Dead Poets Society" in which the students from a prep school are introduced to their new English teacher, Mr. Keating. According to an essay published online on the Peter Weir Cave website, a student is asked by Mr. Keating to read aloud from an introduction to poetry book in which the author describes the manner in which poetry can be appreciated using a graph which plots "perfection" on one axis and "importance of the poem" on another axis with the total area of the poem measuring its "greatness." Mr. Keating pronounces the author's analysis of poetry and his methodology for evaluating a poem's greatness as "excrement." Mr. Keating's goal is to teach the boys to think for

Weather Conditions and Aircraft Accidents Introduction Weather conditions influence the incidence of aircraft accidents in a number of ways. Aircraft can become directly impacted by weather when they are struck by lightning in storms, blown off course, incur malfunctions due to the icing up of engine parts and wings, or are bounced about in the air by turbulence. Wind shear and convective hazards can draw a plane off course where it can collide with another aircraft. Hailstorms can damage an aircraft's shell, thus altering its aerodynamic properties, and a direct hit by lightning during an electrical storm can temporarily blind the pilot. Excessive water ingestion can cause "engine flame-out" ("Aviation hazards: Thunderstorms and deep convection," 2006, p. 25). Weather conditions can precipitate aircraft accidents indirectly as well. An airplane that encounters adverse weather often has to travel out of its way to miss flying through a storm, and this can dangerous

Media Strategy Introduction: Immigration reform can go either way; it can help immigrants and asylum-seekers, or it can help place further restrictions on their lives by creating more punitive laws to discourage them from moving to the United States. There are divisions even among Democrats on the issue of immigration reform. Business lobbies are pushing for change harder than ever. Meanwhile, the Mexican government and other interested parties monitor this issue carefully. Mexico's President would have much to gain politically if immigration reform were to advance in the United States. Almost all debates on immigration reform concentrate on their economic impact. Those who support reforms argue that immigration reform will help the U.S. economy to overcome a labor shortage. Those who oppose immigration reform claim that new immigrants will displace low-paid Americans and further depress wages. The problem with this traditional approach to debating the issues surround
