Lishman's daughter did not train the geese (he did it himself) and all the dramatic events surrounding the girl were created for the film. In addition, Lishman trained the birds only after they had weathered a few winters in Canada. But, after purchasing the rights to the story the studio was concerned with making a movie with cross-generational appeal and the "Amy" story was invented to develop young audiences' identification with the events.

Ballard, a former cinematographer, makes films in which the stories move forward on pure visuals with a fluidity that escapes many directors. Human participation in the action often seems superfluous, but in this film a smooth balance is achieved that is fundamental to the story with its emphasis on human-animal cooperation. The substitution of northern dunes for the coast of North Carolina and the use of Ontario locations for all the other outside settings required careful scouting but, since they were principally aerial shots, many of the usual concerns over location details (e.g., street signs, types of trees, local accents) were simply not a problem.
