Nutting was the director of the Department of Nursing and Health at Teachers College and one of the cofounders of the course in hospital economics. Nutting was the one who drew Goodrich into "the movement," the studies, thought, vision, and agitation fort the university education of nurses. Nutting was one of the first American nurses to champion the cause of the independent endowment of schools of nursing, a precedent for which had been set by Florence Nightingale. Nutting, Goodrich, and Lillian D. Wald would come to be known as "The Great Trio" in American nursing history of the first part of this century. With them in the early years was Lavinia L. Dock, and all four were suffragists and all were possessed of a broad social vision. Dock was the more extreme of the four and always stood as an influence on the other three (Werminghaus, 1950, 34-35).
