This confrontation that is so important in developing the tension in the films is completely absent from the book. Dracula and Van Helsing never exchange words in Stoker's version. However, the direct confrontation between the force of good, Van Helsing, and the source of evil, Dracula, is one that translates well to the screen. From a dramatic perspective, this confrontation in film is necessary for both character development and the creation of tension in a short amount of time.
