The second war, the Suez-Sinai War, began in 1956 when the Egyptian president Gamal Nasser made an effort to seize control of the Suez Canal. In response to the build-up of Egyptian troops in the Sinai Pensinsula, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) launched a pre-emptive strike on October 29, 1956 (Tartter & Mason, 1990, p. 256). Because of Western interests in the Suez Canal, British and French troops were sent to the area to assist the Israelis. Israeli forces managed to seize most of the Sinai Peninsula; however, they withdrew from that territory the following year in response to a U.N. resolution which set up an emergency force presence there.

The Six Day War began on June 5, 1967, when Israeli forces again made a pre-emptive strike against Arab forces building up along its borders. Israel quickly won its fight against Egypt, Syria and Jordan because it made effective use of "pre-emptive surprise and superior air power" (Robinson, 1982, p. 300). At the conclusion of this war, Israel had seized not only the entire Sinai Peninsula up to the east bank of the Suez Canal, but also the West Bank of Jordan and the Golan Heights of Syria (Tartter & Mason, 1990, p. 259). As in the earlier Arab-Israeli wars, the United Nations imposed a cease-fire in order to bring an end to the hostilities. However, Israel refused to withdraw from its seized territories following the Six Day War. This situation resulted in a feeling of resentment among many Arab leaders, and in turn, led to the occurrence of the October War in 1973.
