Abstract: Poulan Weed Eater was consistently experiencing quality problems
in manufacturing a spring, spool retainer clip for its string trimmer. The
company sought the assistance of Kickhaefer Manufacturing Co. (KMC) which
advised Poulan Weed Eater to switch to a No.3 US Baird multiside machine. In
addition, KMC discovered that most of the manufacturing problems were caused
by variability in the second operation of the clip production process. It
suggested tightening up the tolerances on that part of the process.
