For example, Barnes and Herr (1998) investigated for the effects of career counseling on a sample of college students (N=110). Students were randomly assigned to three treatment conditions which were individual counseling alone, individual counseling in combination with the Strong Interest Inventory, or individual counseling in combination with DISCOVER (a computer-assisted career guidance system).

All subjects were pre- and posttested using the Survey of Career Development, The Career Decision Scale and the My Vocational Situation test instruments. According to Barnes and Herr (1998) pretest-posttest comparisons of data collected using these instruments showed that participation in each treatment situation resulted in significant progress.
