It seems clear, however, that June is not at that point truly dedicated to "knowing" her mother, and, in any case, she certainly has no idea of what is in store for her. She does not understand the symbolic importance of the cultural practices followed carefully by her mother and the others, such as the meal her mother plans to cook for the meeting which she would have led had she not died:
