create human beings in any desired image (Chamberland 658). This procedure could hypothetically produce "super humans," resistant or immune to physical disease, and endowed in advance with superior intelligence (Chamberland 658).

Jeremy Rifkin argues in opposition to continued research into genetic engineering. He believes that the fundamental question underlying such research is "whether or not humanity should be in the process of engineering future generations of human beings by technological design in the laboratory" (Rifkin 667). He seems to reduce the power of genetic engineering to a search for the "perfection" of the human species (Rifkin 667). And he also sees as a necessary result of such a search, the likelihood of a resurgence of the theory of Eugenics.

Eugenics can be defined as a science that deals with the improvement of hereditary qualities of a race or breed and Rifkin argues that Eugenics is "the inseparable ethical wing of the age of biotechnology" (664). Linda Bullard agrees. She states that like nuclear power, genetic engineering is not a n
