Many medical professionals believe that human life begins at conception. At the moment of conception, the process of a unique and individual life is begun - the fetus is always a distinct entity. In this view, the fetus is an innocent human life, and therefore has the biological and ethical rights to be protected under the Constitution. Central to this argument, moreover, is the fact that the fetus is not merely a potential person, but is actually a human life, albeit an undeveloped one (Shettles and Rorvi, 1986, pp. 13-22).

Others, looking at the argument from a purely biological standpoint, point out that not only is the fetus alive, but the sperm and the egg are as well. Since the component parts of the fetus are indelibly human, so then is the synthesis. This, however, is not a single claim. If society acknowledges that a human being emerges at birth as a person, then biologically the development of that person is also human.
