so-called new age has gripped our society by its throat and Americans are captives of every wind of doctrine from self-esteem to soap operas (real or fictional), Lewis' cogent presentation of truth is sorely needed. That C. S. Lewis' books are not read so much anymore says more about society than about the author; the one exception, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, is being turned into a cultural icon stripped of its meaning by people who have learned from Joseph Campbell.

Thus Lewis must clarify that "Nothing in Man is either worse or better for being shared with the beasts" (53). This alone could be the thesis statement for a dissertation on current trends of American theology toward paganism and away from Christ.

But he doesn't stop there. In discussing the relationship of "storgé" to animals he notes that from animal to human infant, the need and Need-love is obvious, as is the Gift-love of the mother.
