Although some Senegalese farmers export wool, Senegal's clothing is basically locally sourced cotton, most often white. Typically, dyed and hand-woven fabrics are "reserved for special occasions." Traditionally, weaving is done by men, a skill passed down from father to son, and dyeing, which is done with vegetable dyes, including indigo, is a skill passed from mother to daughter (Mbodj, 2002).

Certain customs and practices associated with dress reflect various ethnic groups; however, as a practical matter there is little distinction between fabric patterns or colors among the country's different ethnic groups.
