, we view battered women as having suffering a traumatic event that is outside the normal range of experiences (a definition that has been aptly applied to PTSD by the American Psychiatry Association, (1980)), then it seems reasonable to suggest treatment approaches effective with PTSD might also be effective in work with battered women. In order to justify this application of these techniques, there is a need for in-depth research on PTSD and battering.

Basic Research Question and Problem Statement

Do battered women suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of the battering experience? Answering this question is the problem addressed in this research. Specifically, this problem is addressed through an extensive review of the literature and the collection of informal interview data obtained from women receiving services at both a shelter and at a large treatment center for battering experiences.
