SHIN SPLINTS

approximately 1,500 strides per mile. The potential for damage is evident.

Chiropractors G. Gerow, B. Matthews, W. Jahn and R. Gerow in "Compartment Syndrome and Shin Splints of the Lower Leg," believe that muscular inelasticity causes MTSS, as do pronated feet, decreased height of the longitudinal arch, improper training and overuse (1:245-246). Improper training can include running on hard or banked surfaces, wearing poorly supporting running shoes, excessive external hip rotation, increased external tibial torsion, hyperpronation, or increased eversion (in mid-stance phase). Such poor technique can cause repeated traction on the tibialis posterior tendon and its attachments to the tibia and interosseous membrane, thus producing tibial tendonitis and the associated "shin splints" pain.
