The country's population approximates 20 million, of whom about 10 percent are mainland Chinese who migrated to the island with the Nationalist government. Although very much in the minority, the Nationalist government has maintained a tight one party political control over the country. The first 4relatively free, multiparty elections since the arrival of the Nationalist government were held in late November 1989, and opposition candidates were generally victorious, although there were not enough elections held for this trend to endanger the Nationalist government.
