One might say there is a Utopia disorder affecting the culture and society known as Amazon.com, one of the biggest and most admired E-Commerce start-ups. It is a utopian disorder in that is appears to be the idealized state for investors on Wall Street and a utopian model of E-Commerce for E-companies, but in its inability to earn any profits despite annual sales of $1 billion its exhibits a tendency toward dystopia. In a way, successful CEO Jeffrey Bezos has been lionized for his innovative and revolutionary approach to business, a symptom much more like a dystopia considering the reality is he has not made investors any profit “an idolatrous adoration of society, the life force, evolution, or the deified leader” (Walsh 108). In a way, this deification of Bezos may help explain why investors have been willing to help elevate Amazon.com’s market share higher than Barnes & Nobles, a company that does post strong quarters and has more economic muscle than Amazon.com. The same deification seems to exist within the company where employees are concerned “The vision thing isn’t all he has brought to Amazon. His energy—he runs up and down the company’s three flights of stairs”—provides much of the place’s electricity” (Hof 1). The purpose of this analysis will be to discuss Bezos, the reasons for Amazon.com’s success but lack of profits, its innovative approach to business and distribution, and the companies strengths and weaknesses as well as its external opportunities and threats. A conclusion will address the likelihood of Amazon.com being able to turn a profit any time in the near future.
