After neuronal processes have activated REM sleep, higher brain functions work to synthesize the essentially random input as well as it can, with dreams as the result. The activation-synthesis hypothesis assumes that dreams are as meaningful as they can be under the adverse working conditions of the brain in REM sleep. The activated brain-mind does its best to attribute meaning to the internally generated signals. In the synthesis stage of dream formation, the mind makes sense of the nonsensical, random neurological activity, creating meanings where there were none before.
