While Bok would personally prefer these offensive displays and forms of communication did not occur, he realizes that in the real world there will always be those whose wish it is to offend and irritate. Yet, he feels that censorship will eventually undermine society and the U.S. Constitution more than the act of displaying or using offensive forms of communication. In light of this Bok gives us some proactive measures to deal with such offensive displays and communications as alternatives to prohibiting them. One method is to ignore them since he believes this will eventually put an end to the displays when those who create them realize they have no effect on others.
