After the invasion of southern Lebanon by Israeli forces, the Lebanese government protested the actions to the UN Security Council. Lebanese government officials denied any involvement in the PLO attack on Israel. Less than a week after the initial attacks, the Security Council moved to pass resolutions 425 and 246 which mandated the Israeli government halt military action and remove all its troops from Lebanon. The result of these attacks was the formation of the United Nations Interim Force In Lebanon (UNIFIL). The goals of UNIFIL were defined as confirming “the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon; to restore international peace and security; and to assist the Lebanese government in ensuring the return of its effective authority in the area” (Morris et. al 1).
