Mohammad’s father cannot see the joy of Mohammad or the joy Mohammad experiences. He is too focused on material and economic security and thinks Mohammad’s ailment will undermine his value in the marriage market as he is about to wed a wealthy widow. While Mohammad waits we see he hears the sounds of nature and touches nature like most people see. He hears a chirping bird and locates the wounded animal before returning it to its tree. Symbols of the helplessness of all animals before God are provided, from wounded birds, to fish trapped in a puddle, to a turtle trying to right itself to no avail. All of these remind us that the blind are God’s creatures as we all are, all of us in need of help to enjoy God’s paradise.
