Ethno-caring instead of ethno-centric caring is what cultural care is all about. The diversity between cultures is nothing new. However, unless a culture of nursing care takes into account the different factors which influence how a particular culture gives care (in times of illness, death, etc.) it is impossible to discover the universal elements that all cultures share in the process of caring (i.e., we all care for the ill, we all help support friends who experience loss). Leininger defines cultural care diversity as “the variabilities and/or differences in meanings, patterns, values, lifeways, or symbols of care within or between collectivities that are related to assistive, supportive, and facilitative, or enabling human care expressions,” (Reynolds, et.al., 1993: 8).

Yet, as much as Leininger was able to assess from her anthropology background that these variabilities and differences in meanings and values existed between different cultures, she knew from her nursing and care knowledge
