With the numerous amount of lawsuits that have been successfully won by claimants contending that poisoned air, land, and water resulted in increased numbers of birth defects in children born in polluted areas we see this is not as much fiction as might first appear. Thus our narrator becomes Offred, i.e., robbed of her own name or identity. Robbed of their own identity, the narrator muses on what she believes might be Republic attempts to fulfill women in ways that keep them subservient and content in their oppressed state “Sometimes I think these scarves aren’t sent to the Angels at all, but unraveled and turned back into balls of yarn, to be knitted again in their turn. Maybe it’s just something to keep the Wives busy, to give them a sense of purpose” (Atwood 13).

Offred is condition at the Rachel and Leah Center to accept her new status in society. Women will now serve as Handmaids. The Handmaid’s are meant to service male
