In the back of the head is a small protrusion which could be meant to represent the woman’s hair or some decorative ornament. Primitive tribal customs and practices were responsible for the art that influenced Giacometti at this point in his career, and we see the primitive methods employed in this sculpture which looks like it was welded together piecemeal and dares present the big, black womb of a woman as its central focal point.
