ic development but also human development. Therefore, we see that participation in sports and much of the philosophy underlying sports is perfectly suited to helping raise young adults who will enter society with sound mind and body development that is community directed.

Sports and the competition it entails offer a great way of measuring our own abilities, strengths and weaknesses, in comparison with others. Through this process we are able to gain a deeper understanding of our own self, hopefully a self that becomes aligned with internal impression and external reality. When we have a manner of measuring our strengths and weaknesses we are able to direct our energies toward growth by focusing on our weaknesses and trying to develop them into strengths. The process builds a richer human being. The inherent process involved in sports allows it to be a microcosm of the larger reality we face outside the sports environment. We must often struggle against enormous odds in life, experiencing both victory and loss. Sports allows for preparation for life’s biggest challenges by presenting a similar environment which conditions the participant for handling reality, “Recreation is, literally, re-creation of the spirit. Every life contains conflict and disappointment. During the time of engagement in a sport, our attention is totally consumed by that activity. Enveloped in the concentration of the game, the world with all its cares and troubles falls away from us and our spirits soar. When the game is finished, we return to our daily responsibilities refreshed and renewed, better equipped to deal with the larger struggle which is everyday life” (Sports 1).
