Since November of 1996 when the ratings code was put into place, foul language and violence have risen by more than 30 percent and sexual content has increased by more than 40 percent (Television 2). Television is considered to be detrimental to the physical and psychological development of children according to thousands of studies by such groups as the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Psychological Association, the Surgeon General and many others. Further, many argue that such violent, profane, and sexually explicit content blur the difference between real and unreal and good and evil. As the results of three separate studies at the University of Alabama concluded, “Young teens (13- and 14-year-olds) exposed to large amounts of immoral sex on television are at risk of having their moral judgment altered” (Murphree 1). Such blurring causes a family’s ability to discern to erode. Further, television permits little reflection or interaction – both necessary for real cognitive development. Many studies exist that demonstrate the deleterious effects of viewing television on behavior and psychological development. Vessey (et al., 483) comment on television’s ability to undermine family control and socialization paradigms:

Excessive television viewing may result in missed opportunities for cognitive and social interaction and imaginary play, all critical components of early childhood development.
