Jung argued that as mankind evolved, so, too, did the psyche. As we evolved through time we experienced certain things as a species that are deposited in the deepest recesses of our awareness. These are things we share in common with all members of our species. In other words, perhaps we all are constructed in such a way as to experience death in a similar manner, or love, or religious experiences or what have you. According to Boeree (3), the collective unconscious is akin to a psychic inheritance “It is the reservoir of our experiences as a species, a king of knowledge we are all born with. And yet we can never be directly conscious of it. It influences all of our experiences and behaviors, most especially the emotional ones, but we only know about it indirectly, by looking at those influences.”

Within Jung’s theory of the collective unconscious are archetypes, the components of the collective unconscious. These archetypes help demonstrate the validity of the collective unconscious as a universally shared component of the human psyche. This is because each of them basically equates to a certain way of experiencing something, even though the experiencing is not learned behavior. Archetypes operate on personality and behavior in a manner similar to the way instinct serves this role in Freud’s theory. For example, Jung’s shadow archetype encompasses the sex and life instincts. The shadow also represents our animal self, a self concerned only with survival, pleasure and reproduction. Other archetypes exist, like the mother, mana, persona, and anima and animus.
