The biography of Tom Clancy would basically appear as your basic rags-to-riches tale of hard work, drive and ambition, positive attitude and a little luck. However, as with any minimalist description of something as complex as a human life, this perspective would miss the real man behind the author. Clancy grew up always feeling as if he’d been a disappointment to his father. His father delivers mail and his mother worked in a department store. He graduated from Loyola College in his native city of Baltimore, Maryland, after a fairly undistinguished academic career. Clancy began his career as an insurance broker, marrying his wife Wanda and fathering three daughters and a son. He took the traditional route so many young adults do after graduating from high school. He built himself a family and a comfortable existence. However, Clancy was not a traditional young adult. In his late thirties he looked around and took stock of his life. Something was missing and he didn’t much like what he saw, “'I asked myself for the hundredth-thousandth time: ‘What are you going to do when you grow up? All of a sudden, it hit me: You are grown up and you’re stuck! You’re comfortable but stuck in a boring job. I’d made my own trap, I had kids I had to support, mortgage payments and a business to pay off. If you’re afraid to go for your dream, then about the time you retire, you’ll have the condo down in Florida, and you’ll be there in the elephant graveyard waiting to die and you’ll think…What if when I was 30, I had gone and sailed around the world or bought that airplane I always wanted to buy’” (Brown 01A).
