Treatment outcomes research in the field of addictions is growing. Outcome studies try to answer questions upon which we base our treatment models such as: What do we believe about the causes of problem drinking and addiction? Are there some treatment components or specific educational topics that are more effective in helping individuals recover than others? and What makes treatment work?

Regarding causes of the problem, E. M. Jellinek's conceptualization of the "disease model" lead to a better understanding of alcoholism as a chronic, progressive, treatable disease. As the disease model developed, it was concluded that genetic, psychosocial and environmental factors influence both the development of the disease and its treatment. During this period, an organization know as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) was formed. This organization utilized the disease model philosophy and helped individuals understand that lifelong abstinence and recovery are achievable by sharing and applying the principles of the AA program.

Regarding effective treatment components, a treatment framework evolved, call the Minnesota Model, which incorporated the " Jellinek's disease model " and the "AA model."
