Marriage and family therapists will thus need to be aware of the type of pressures faced by their clients who are dealing with the condition of ADHD.

Sanjay Gupta's (2002) article, titled "Been Down So LongĂ  Prozac and Other New Drugs Triggered a New Revolution in the Treatment of Depression. But Do We Still Need the Couch," highlighted the growing use of a group of antidepression medications know as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). According to Gupta (2002), compared to the previous generation of antidepressant medications, this group of drugs including Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil and Sarafem are more effective at treating depression with few side effects and decreased risk of overdose (p. 148).

On the positive side, the use of these drugs can prevent mentally ill people from harming themselves and others. Nonetheless, by describing this group of medications as a whole, Gupta (2002) seemed to suggest that they are interchangeable. This can be highly misleading to members of the general public, who are unfamiliar with the process of using medications to treat depression (p. 148).

However, Gupta (2002) did point out that relying on medications to treat depression also has negative implications. First, many depressed patients who learn to rely on medications to lift their spirits will not go to psychotherapy to address the underlying causes of their depression. Instead of facing their problems, they will learn to depend on drugs to alleviate their mental suffering in the long term. In such situations, the drugs are inhibiting the patients' psychological well-being by allowing them to escape from their problems (p. 148).
