Prussia was victorious and Napoleon III was driven out of power. The people of France suffered from the physical destruction of the Franco-Prussian War. For example, the city of Paris was heavily bombarded during that war. In addition to the physical damages, it can be seen that the Franco-Prussian War had a detrimental impact on the national pride of the French people as well. The Prussian victory in the war was seen as a harsh national defeat in the eyes of most Frenchmen.

In this depressing climate, further destruction to the French society occurred when yet another bloody revolution took place in the nation's government. In 1871, a group of politicians rebelled against the government body of the National Assembly. As a result of this rebellion, a temporary revolutionary government known as the "Paris Commune" was established. The Paris Commune only remained in power for a period of two months.
