Young Children and Attention Deficit Disorder

HD, the proposed research study will focus on African American boys ages six through 12 (grades one through seven) who are diagnosed with ADHD, who attend public schools, and who are integrated into regular classrooms. An ADHD child, for purposes of the proposed study will be defined as a child under the age of 16 years diagnosed by a physician as having ADHD following a DSM-III or a DSM-IV assessment (Biederman, Mick, Faraone, & Burback, 2001; Nolan, Gadow, & Sprafkin, 2001).

Literature if reviewed that is relevant to the research purpose of the proposed study. Theory and treatment literature is reviewed.

ADHD involves heightened motor activity, impulsivity, and deficits in attention and rule-governed behavior. Additionally, aggression and conduct problems often accompany ADHD. Other characteristics of children with ADHD include deficiencies in problem solving, deficiencies in behavior modulation, and deficiencies in overall self-control and regulation.
