In all these instances, riots occurred because of the intense racial prejudice of whites against African-Americans. Already in these cases, one can see the role of the police in condoning brutality against African-Americans. In spite of the abolition of slavery, whites continued to discriminate against blacks through segregation in public facilities. African Americans were unable to acquire decent jobs and housing. Therefore, they were unable to elevate themselves from their oppressive lives (Walters 20).
