With professional baseball players becoming bigger, stronger and better conditioned than in the past, the temptation to use steroids is understandable, particularly in older players. It is harder to put on muscle as age increases, and older players resort to steroids to keep up with younger players (McKinley, 2000). But this is changing the very nature of the sport. It no longer depends on a player=s natural abilities and talents, but on artificially derived muscle power. This takes away the original purpose of the game - competition between people, ordinary people who happen to have a particular talent. Now we are seeing artificial talent. This sends a message to children that the only thing that is important is winning - no matter how it is achieved.
