High School Achievement Levels in Math, Language and Literacy

t scores in mathematics and language arts dropped below state average in Camden's Academy Charter High School, compared to middle school scores. Eighth grade math scores (at Camden's Promise Charger School) on Grade Eight Proficiency Assessment (GEPA) were at 67% in 2004 compared to state averages of 55% and language arts literacy scores were at 74% compared to state averages of 66% in 2004; both math and language arts literacy scores were higher than state averages. Eleventh grade math scores (at Camden's Academy Charter High School) on the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) were at 40% compared to state averages of 49% in mathematics (state math average is 70%) and language arts literacy scores were at 75% compared to state averages of 63% in 2004 (state average overall was 82%); only language arts literacy scores were higher than HSPA state averages but these scores were lower than state averages overall (Great Schools, 2006a/b; Public School Review, 2006a/b). While students continued to perform well in both subjects, the fact that math scores dropped below state averages is of concern. A study was needed to determine teacher and student perspectives regarding this drop in scores.

The setting for the study is Camden's Promise Charter School and Camden's Academy Charter High School. Camden's Promise Charter School, located in Camden, New Jersey, includes grades six through eight. Total enrollment is 261 students (61% females) and average class size is 19 students. School attendance is 96% compared to state averages that range from 91% to 95%. Students by ethnicity are as follows: 69% black (compared to 19% state average); 30% Hispanic (19% state average); and zero white (55% state average). Most of the students speak the English language at home (83%) and 71% are eligible for free lunch (26% state average) (Great Schools, 2006a/b; Public School Review, 2006a/b).
