Traumatic Brain Injury

urs of the initial trauma with vasogenic fluid accumulating in the brain causing cerebral oedema, raising intracranial pressure, and lowering the threshold of systemic blood pressure for cerebral ischaemia. A reduction in cerebral blood flow or oxygenation below a threshold value or increased intracranial pressure leading to cerebral herniation increases both brain damage and morbidity. Thus, most medical doctors believe that immediate treatment for TBI is necessary to reduce the likelihood that secondary injury will negatively affect cognitive functioning (Ghajar, 2000; Jordan, 2000; Salazar, et al, 2000).

Where medicine leaves off in the treatment of TBI, cognitive rehabilitation begins. Boake and Boake (1991) indicate that because of the long recovery course after TBI, many patients are appropriate for postacute rehabilitation treatment or therapy directed at community re-entry and a return to work. Newer program models for patients with TBI, particularly programs employing cognitive rehabilitation techniques or strategies, are
