Voice Studio Technology

nes. For example, Beethoven could not have written his symphonies had someone not first invented the instruments he wrote for.

In the recent years, vocal professionals have combined music and technology in order to enhance both the production of music and the capacities of the human voice. Electronic musical instruments (e.g., synthesizers and sequencers) have been employed in the sound studio and editing room with increasingly regularity and, more significantly, with good results in terms of vocal performance and instrumental quality improvements. When these technologies were first introduced and then explored in practical applications, they were seen as logical steps in the development of music as an art form (Moore, 1992). The technological age has been introduced not only serves to provide advanced musical recording, amplification, and compositional techniques, but it also has the capacity to help us enhance the vocal abilities of singers as well as instrumental musicians as will be demonstrated in this thesis.

Today, computerized and other electronic technologies have been created that reproduce singers' voices and permit the analysis and encoding of singers' voices and singing styles; these technologies are useful in both the training of vocalists and in the recording of their vocalizations (Neesham, 1996). New synthesizers and other equipment known as spectrogram technology have been created that augment traditional methods of studio teaching (Nair, 1997).

One such technology is the spectrogram, a diagnostic tool that assists the vocalist in deepening his or her knowledge of vocal acoustics, serves as a primary feedback tool for use in the voice studio and the practice room. The spectrogram promises to revolutionize the training of vocalists and to enhance their performance.

The spectrogram has been in use since the 1940s and is recognized as an indispensable tool in the hands of voice researchers. Until re...
