Beverly Hills, California:An Anthropological Study

By the time I arrived in Beverly Hills and found a parking spot, it was a little after noon. I had wanted to try to take a guided tour of the Beverly Hills to help me understand how the city was laid out and to be able gather some information while people watching. One of the first decisions I made was to take the Beverly Hills Trolley on the Sites and Scenes Trolley Tour. The next tour was for 1 pm, so for $5 I was taken on a 50-minute tour that showed us art galleries, the Creative Artists Agency, the Museum of Television and Radio, Beverly Hills City Hall, as well as other sights.

Our tour director, Margot, was an interesting person and not at all what I would expect to be a tour guide. My initial perception was that any tour guide in Beverly Hills would have to be similar to one of the "crew members" at Disneyland - dressed in an overly cute costume, too young, too cheery, very well groomed, and white. Margot was entirely different. She wore a black dress, coat, and hat and was wearing fishnet stockings with high heels. She was black, yet when she opened her mouth to speak, instead of speaking in the Black English or vernacular that I was expecting, spoke in a very British accent. This was my first lesson in
