nted maternity in other countries has made it difficult for women to leave undesirable situations, such as extreme poverty or abusive relationships. Similarly, the pro-choicers state, in America, the hard life of Norma McCorvey, the Jane Roe of the famous Roe v. Wade case, exemplifies the negative effect of anti-abortion laws ("Abortion: One Romania", 1995, p. 137). And they now note that even Ireland's government and the Irish Catholic Church are slowly becoming more liberal, especially on issues of abortion, which was spurred by several highly publicized events such as the X case, which centered on the issue of abortion (Toibin, 1995, p. 45).

The debate over the moral aspects of abortion in America has turned into a debate over the use of violence and the right-of- protest in the pro-choice versus the right to life or "pro-life" movements. In response to the heated debate, a federal law was recently passed which makes denying people access to abortion clinics illegal; in other words, the increasing violence by anti-abortion protesters directly led to the passage of a new law which makes blocking the entryway to an abortion clinic a federal crime. Some pro-life supporters believe that this law is discriminatory, and think that they are being denied their right to free speech because of the violent acts of a few misguided people (Clark, 1995, p. 299).

Notwithstanding the free speech argument espoused by the pro-lifers, supporters of the law point out that the law denies no one the right to free speech but instead protects innocent clinic employees as well as those who seek clinic services. Undaunted by the new law, pro-lifers say that they are morally obligated to stand outside of clinics to prevent abortions from being performed on ill-advised young women (Hearn, 1995, p. 1).
