GPS technology has been put into phones, wristwatches, and handheld devices. However, it has become especially prominent in automobiles because it is in automobiles that the technology has performed most accurately. GPS capability in cars is known generically as telematics (Driscoll, 2002), and it is combined with telephone service. Even though there is a law that says GPS has to be put on cellular phones, car manufacturers are the main sources of telematics. That makes GPS in cars the most important way the technology is used.
In General Motors cars, the OnStar system enables users to push a button and get in touch with a GM operator. They can report accidents or get roadside help if they are stranded. The same is true of the Mercedes TeleAid system. Additional GPS abilities include emergency and collision notification, stolen vehicle tracking, vehicle diagnostics, navigation assistance, traffic alerts, and monitoring family vehicles (Driscoll, 2002). GPS enables those who are equipped with monitors to track where the GPS units (and the people using them) are at any time. That would include police agencies that are tracking car thieves, auto-service companies, emergency-response agencies, fleet managers, or parents who want to know whereabouts of children who are driving their cars. GPS can track not only where a car is at a particular moment but also where it has been. That is, it can track the route that a driver took to arrive at a particular place.
The benefits of such technology seem as obvious as a list of GPS technical capabilities. For the most part they can be summed up in two words: security and safety. The security concept is connected to the capacity of tracking the whereabouts of a car. If it is has been stolen, it would be a simple matter for the police to use tracking technology to find the exact location and retrieve the car for its rightful owner.
