Muslims in southern Thailand have long lived there as a religio-ethnic minority group. They are concentrated chiefly in three provinces: Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat, the latter two of which border Malaysia. The vexed nature of Thailand's management of these provinces and the grievances of the Muslim minority concentrated there cannot properly be appreciated without serious attention to the country's geography. The red circle on the map shows where the country's southernmost provinces on Peninsular Thailand meet Malaysia. Also identified is the Isthmus of Kra, where Thailand's border with Burma, or Myanmar, gives Thailand its narrowest of territory. The peninsula is bordered on the west by the Andaman Sea and on the east by the Gulf of Thailand, with the South China Sea just eastward beyond. The southernmost tip of Peninsular Thailand terminates with Singapore.
